Lighting Cameraman & DoP

Thank you for dropping by.

My interest in taking pictures began at an early age and there aren’t many school trips and events from my childhood that I didn’t document on a camera of some sort or another.

That evolved into working for local newspapers whilst studying at college and it seemed that I would pursue the photography route after my exams. However the opportunity to work with a hugely experienced lighting cameraman arose during the summer holidays and the rest is history!

Having now spent over 20 years in the camera department, that decision to move from a couple of frames a second to 25 (and more) was definitely the right choice.

What happened next...

I spent ten years working as an assistant cameraman on a diverse selection of projects; from BBC magazine programmes through to 35mm feature films and a host of other dramas, commercials and corporate films in between.

During that time I learnt not only the technical aspects of what is expected of a cameraman, but also the techniques of shooting and directing for single camera, documentary and drama lighting, interview and journalistic methods.

Probably the most important things that I learnt were the interpersonal skills required to be able to work with an ever changing crew, different contributors and members of the public. These skills have helped to get the most out of my crew, interviewees and contributors. No one person on a shoot is more or less important in my opinion. First and foremost we are a team.

After ten years training, I felt ready to branch out on my own and started working as an camera operator and subsequently lighting cameraman.

My work now crosses all of the programme boundaries, single & multi-camera, magazine to sport to documentary, pop promo’s to training videos.

I pride myself in my adaptability and also being able to keep on working professionally in any circumstances, whatever the weather, wherever I am and however long the day has become.

My current kit list is listed below. Of course there are a million other bits and pieces that come with me that might seem unimportant, until you need them.

Although I own my own HD kits, I have great connections with both boutique and major hire companies and because of that I can supply whatever format you might be looking for, or if you have your own kit I am quite happy to shoot on that. I do not insist that I only use my own kit when you book me.

Shooting with on F5 and RED 18-85 zoom.

I am regularly shooting on a wide variety of cameras including the Arri Amira and Alexa, Sony F5 and PMW500.

As well as shooting single camera I also have plenty of experience in multi camera environments, either in an OB situation or multi camera PSC.

If needed I can provide additional crew should you need them. I have had the pleasure of working with many great people across all grades and crafts; producers, fixers, researchers, runners/PA, make-up and wardrobe, DIT’s and wranglers, sound, lighting, grips, riggers and facility vehicles.

If you are coming from overseas and need help with locations I can organise feature film credited location and unit managers, even glacier and climbing safety teams.

Whatever you need for your shoot, I can provide it, freeing you from having to make those calls and emails.
